After months of thinking, writing, revisiting, and refining, Learning to Lead Computing is officially published.
This isn’t just a book launch. For us it’s a conversation starter. A provocation. A companion for those navigating the complexities of leading computing in school. Whether you’re a new subject lead trying to make sense of the curriculum, or a more experienced teacher wanting to refresh and build a clearer vision for your subject, this book is for you.
Why did we write it?

Firstly, when we started leading computing we were galvanised by the incredible team of teachers at CAS (Computing for School), however, there was still nothing out there to be a handy ‘pick up when you need it’ guide to computing leadership. Too often, computing is seen as the domain of ‘tech experts’ or something that only matters when the timetable allows. Leadership in this subject rarely comes with a roadmap or one similar to others. Learning to Lead Computing was born from that gap — from the realisation that subject leadership needs more than a list of units or an audit of devices. It needs clarity of purpose, curriculum confidence, and a grounded approach to building teacher subject knowledge.
What’s inside?

We’ve structured the book around the core pillars of leading computing effectively:
– Building your subject vision
– Developing staff confidence across the strands
– Embedding computing within a knowledge-rich curriculum
– Navigating assessment, progression, and deep dives
Each chapter is practical, research-informed, and rooted in what schools are actually working with — whether you’ve got iPads in every classroom or you’re still wheeling in the trolley of Chromebooks.
Who is it for?

You don’t need to be an expert. You don’t even need to love computing. But if you’re someone who cares about children experiencing the full richness of the curriculum, and you want to lead this subject with clarity and purpose, then this is for you.
A thank you

Thank you to everyone who has encouraged us, challenged our thinking, and shaped the ideas within these pages. Special thanks to the teachers that have tested ideas and reminded us that leadership in computing is a journey, not a checklist.
